Internet, Santa or killer?

Image a day without internet, what will you do? No online music, no online movie, no online chat, no online shopping, no online homework, no email, no facebook, no e-book, at all, what will you do? How long can you live without internet? For me, I guess, just one day can drive me crazy!

Believe it or not, internet is already part of our life, and whatever you like it or not, you cannot deny that internet is changing our life styles. Just as the article we read before, Google made us stupid, I blame this to internet. After all, Google, as a single cell of whole internet, cannot influence us without internet. We do be changed by internet as a single person. How about whole society? Still, we can see the change! Economic Value of the Advertising –Supported Internet Ecosystem gave us very convictive data to show what internet bring to whole society.

The data didn’t surprise me. Internet is not a simple product in our modern society. It is a tool connects all industry and customers. It generate 2 million employment opportunity in 2011 and will create more positions in the future, for sure. This number not only comes from the employment from IT and online marketing department, but also from increasing small entrepreneurs. In my memory, holding a company and being a true boss is a really hard thing. I admired all the people who owned a company when I was a child. However, ten year past, when I went into college, I found that some classmates started to run their own online stores. They became small companies’ owners. Some friends even gave up high salary jobs and insisted their own business.

Some people earn while some people lost, however. We can see a lot of industries are struggling while internet is shining. Newspaper is dying, the only thing people need is news; album is dying, the only thing people need is music; retail stores are replaced by online stores; traditional books are replaced by e-books. Large amounts of staffs in traditional industry are being worried about losing job someday somehow while large amounts of younger people find their suitable position in online industry.

History wheel never stop turning. We watched so many products or industries sparkled one time and vanished other time. Will internet be replaced by something else? Of course it will. There must be another more stable and faster system showing up. And we need to definitely be careful, catching the opportunities while avoiding being replaced.

  1. I appreciate the fact that you point out some industries were influenced negatively by the internet in the past years while internet-based companies were rising. Then I trust there should be a report of calculating the unemployment number, resulting from the ad-supported internet industry prosperity.
It is true that taking the ride of the trend is fatal when we do business, which requires more pinpoint business environment sensitivity.
But I think Internet is hard to be replaced by other technology. I trust more and more technology will be emerged based on the internet.

  2. You really did a good job to combine and connect out previous material with this report. Also, the part you compare online business with traditional business is thoughtful, especially the last second paragraph. I totally agree with you and Iris about the opinion that unemployment and loss that traditional business will face to. However, that is why people should keep pace with the modern society. Another point I am doubting is that you said that the internet will be replaced by other system. Just like I mentioned in my blog, I do not think internet can be easily replaced, however, new technology such as "internet of things" may be emerged and prosperous in the near future.

    1. Julia, you are right, people need to keep pace with trend, trying to catch up and earn from trend. I left comments about internet of things below your blog, and I think that is a really interesting topic.
For the rest of your comments, you can see the reply I left to Iris, that might explain some of your doubt.
Thank you so much for your comment!

  3. Hi, Iris, I believe there must be some data to show the internet crush to traditional industry. We can keep seeking them and make a comparison.
For the internet, I believe that nothing could stay forever, the only problem is time. Maybe someday there shows up a more powerful net which can connect virtual and real word together. It may based on internet, but have a advanced function and niubility name!

  4. Nan,
Like your thoughts about Internet. You always have this divergent and interesting thinking every time in your blog. Do you have ideas about what will be the next thing to replace Internet? I’d really like to hear your thought on this one. Maybe we can have a great talk on this topic with our computer and electronica engineer friends. Hah. In addition, you said you are not surprised with the data which I think it’s very impressive since I was surprised and I read Julia said in her blog that she was shock. I am thinking the reason why you are not surprised is that you already have the projection of the Internet industry in your mind early before. It’s really impressive.

    1. Actually, I'm very willing to talk with our engineer friends since they can bring us many fresh ideas which we will never know as a Business school student. Maybe we can talk with them about this topic after mid term exam. I think internet of things must be crucial in the future, but I'm not sure whether it would show as a additive to internet or separately. There should be a advanced net. Maybe this net is still called internet, but it may totally different with the internet we familiar with right now and contains more connections between virtual and real word. At that time, we do not need QR or whatever code anymore, every single product is already connect to the huge net.
I'm not surprise about the data is simply because when I look around friends nearby, so many of them are benefit from Taobao, or found a high salary job in a internet company. Then think about how often we use internet and how many information and products we can get through internet, it's not very hard to infer that internet has a huge influence on society.
